Gov. Sununu kills carbon reducing gas tax

The pact being developed by Massachusetts and other East Coast states to cap carbon emissions from vehicles could add up to 17 cents to the price of a gallon of gas and generate revenue for state governments.  Leaders from a coalition of eastern states, including Massachusetts, have been working for over a year to develop a regional “cap-and-invest” program to reduce carbon pollution from cars and trucks and generate the resources needed to expand clean transit options and improve public health.

The effort, known as the Transportation Climate Initiative, has also become a central part of Gov. Charlie Baker’s transportation and climate agenda, with the administration proposing to earmark half of all proceeds generated toward improving public transit.
But the coalition already began to splinter Tuesday in light of the newly forecast economic impacts, with New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu announcing that his state would not participate.

Inspiration, Part II: The Drawdown Project

The Drawdown Project helped SCCC steering committee members Katherine Thorndike and Leonard Witt visualize the possibilities for attacking global warming on individual and societal levels.

Its vision statement inspires us most:

Stopping global warming is possible, with solutions that exist today. In order to do this, we must work together to achieve Drawdown, the point when greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere start to decline.

See Drawdown’s list of 100 ways to drawdown or sequester greenhouse gases. You might be surprised by the top 10 methods, including limiting food waste and eating more plant based diets.

The temperate forests, which surround us here in Sandwich, N.H., are important for sequestering greenhouse gases; so, how we manage these resources is vital to ours and our children’s future.

Another way to learn more about the Drawdown Project, is to listen to the Drawdown Agenda podcasts. We recommend listening to Episode 1 first and then Episode 14, each is about 50 minutes long. After that skip around to topics that interest you.

Pachamama: What Inspires Us, Part I

Katherine Thorndike, who along with Leonard Witt and Peggy Longley, all of Sandwich and all on the steering committee, pointed us to the Pachamama Alliance.

Here is why it inspires us:

Pachamama Alliance, empowered by our partnership with indigenous people, is dedicated to bringing forth an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, socially just human presence on this planet.

Our unique contribution is to generate and engage people everywhere in transformational conversations and experiences consistent with this purpose. We weave together indigenous and modern worldviews such that human beings are in touch with their dignity and are ennobled by the magnificence, mystery, and opportunity of what is possible for humanity at this time.

We are here to inspire and galvanize the human family to generate a critical mass of conscious commitment to a thriving, just and sustainable way of life on Earth. This is a commitment to transforming human systems and structures that separate us, and to transforming our relationships with ourselves, with one another, and with the natural world.

Plus they are not just about words, they are all about action as are we at the Sandwich Climate Crisis Coalition (SCCC). We recommend that you take the Pachamama Alliance’s 90-minute Awakening the Dreamer inspirational tutorial on what we all can do to end global warming.

How We Decided to Join the Fight to End Global Warming

The Sandwich Climate Crisis Coalition (SCCC) began with a post on the Sandwich Board, our town’s public listserv, which is really like a small town newspaper. Everything gets posted there from lost dogs, to things for sale, to news about events like the Sandwich Fair to discussion of topics of more substance.

Sandwich Fair, 2019

A couple of months ago, people were trying to convince a denier that global warming was human caused. Back and forth they went. Leonard Witt, a Sandwich resident,  jumped in said he had  enough of the arguing about a settled issue. Argument was just what the fossil fuel companies wanted. Witt instead made a call to action. He was joined by Katherine Thorndike, another Sandwich resident. Together, using the Sandwich Board as their invitation vehicle, they called an ad hoc meeting at the local cafe . They expected maybe three or four people. Instead 23 showed up, including nine students from the Community School in adjacent Tamworth, N.H. Today we have more than 50 people who have opted into our database, not bad for a town of 1,300. We have subcommittees interested in (1) liaising with other regional, state and national groups, (2) education, (3) communication and public relations (4) research and (5) legislation. It didn’t take us long to realize we are not alone. Grassroots organizations are forming throughout New Hampshire and through the country. Follow our blog here at this site to learn and act with us. And, of course, if you live nearby, join us. We can and we will make this a better world for our children and their children.
